About The Commandments of Jesus
The gospels were thoroughly analyzed and the criteria to determine the commandments are as follow:
- When Jesus taught a lesson either figuratively or by example. A lesson taught by a teacher is for the benefit and improvement of the student.
- Any beatitude taught by Jesus. Beatitudes follow principles in the original 613 Mosaic laws.
- Any direct instruction or commandment from Jesus.
- Whenever Jesus uses the words do, does, do not, take heed, you shall, you shall not, to be, assuredly, I say to you, do you not know that, or any text emphasizing the importance of the instruction to be followed.
NOTE: Commandments spoken by Jesus that should be observed by a Jewish person were not included since it requires an Israelite to follow it.
Some instructions require great mental and emotional sacrifice, absolute selflessness, and trust in God. Other commandments are simple and more action oriented. Ultimately, God wants us to be imitators of Jesus, the Living Word. We are to observe them carefully mindfully cultivating the qualities of God within ourselves. That’s the love of God at work in us, and the shining image of our Lord Jesus Christ within.
Although following some commandments may appear to be costly to follow, rest assured the development of Godliness far outweighs the price. Glorifying God with your heart, soul, mind, and body is part of the practice which brings us closer to our eternal God. Its effects will be seen with great clarity and detail in the after-life. Study them, meditate on them, go over them with your Bible until they become part of your thinking and behavior. Give your entire being to God as you follow them.
