Losing Focus? Christian Meditation May Help
The idea that meditation improves the mind is not new and has been studied at length. Science has proven that meditation improves our mental and physical health because the brain's gray matter is exercised. Just like exercising your muscles your brain gets stronger.
In a 2013 study led by Michael D. Mrazek from the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences at the University of California in Santa Barbara, identified that brain function is actually enhanced by the simple practice of mindfulness meditation.
The study revealed that just two week of meditation is all it takes to decrease mind wandering and improve cognitive performance while improving comprehension scores.
Now take a look at what Psalm 1 verses 2 and 3 state:
"But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and night. He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season, whose leaf also shall not wither; and whatever he does shall prosper."
God's word states that if a person concentrates and meditates on scripture continually they will prosper. In others, their mind will be alert, they will abound with creativity, the capacity to envision will be strong, and their mental abilities to accomplish many things will be enriched.
Mindfulness meditation is nothing more than sitting quietly and letting thought come and go until the mind becomes still. The benefit of the simple technique is a testament of God's inherently beautiful design of the human body which requires very little to become optimized. This is in stark contrast to being blessed by God when the thought of the mind is deeply influenced by His word which is a more powerful, form of meditation.
The results from the University of California is just the beginning. In 2016 a study from Carnegie Mellon University and confirmed by Harvard University and Massachusetts General Hospital, shows how even the simplest meditation relives stress. Still another study published US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health and authored by the journal Psychosomatic Medicine proved that simple mindfulness meditation enhances areas of the brain which improves our immune function providing valuable protection against disease.
Science is discovering that meditation prospers both mind and body, much like a tree plant by a river. There is no end to God's magnificent glory. The only thing scientists are discovering is the laws by which God governs His creation, us.
The most thrilling aspect of all this is that science has no intention on stopping which will prove God's word more each day. Take for instance, the advice of psychology professor Marsha Linehan from the University of Washington. A simple technique she teaches patients to improve mood and concentration is to simply sit on a bench in any public place, and to direct their eyes forward. The idea is to avoid looking at people as the walk by. It's okay to notice them, but you keep your eyes and mind focused on one thing so everything else fades away. Results show people who practice this technique have better focus, become less distracted, and generally feel healthier.
So does the Bible say about this technique?
"Let your eyes look directly forward, and your gaze be straight before you." ~ Proverbs 4:25
Although this instruction is verbatim how Dr. Linehan instructs her patients, the verse refers to the mental practice of keeping the mind focused on God's word alone. This of course requires discipline and practice. Once you master the technique of solely being influenced by God's word cultivated within, you will reap benefits far beyond Linehan's patients.
In John 14:23 Jesus states that if anyone loves Him, they will "keep" His word, and the presence of God will increase within them.
The way to benefit from Christian meditation is by taking time each day to study and meditate on God's word.
Wake up early every day. Kneel before God and pray. Then open your Bible and begin, reading, analyzing, and pondering each statement. You most deeply comprehend it. Do this for 20 to 30 minutes each day, then progressively go longer.
As the days, weeks, and months go by, your mind will taste and see God, while God's presence becomes strengthened in you. It is truly an extraordinary experience.
Meditation is something that's helping many people. Meditation is nothing more than a way of tapping into a marvelous design in the human body. God designed our body to be infinitely capable of many things but few honor God, or His creation, and live well below their potential.
The biblical meditation exercise I just outlined will help you disentangle burdensome thoughts that can sometimes overwhelm. Science has proven that you will have better mental and physical health, while the Bible states that you will receive more of Gods presence and prosper in every way if you practice Christian meditation.
Do you need more peace, better concentration and focus, happiness, or better health? Open the Bible and start meditating.
We're praying for you every day. God bless you.
See you in the kingdom.
