Christian meditation training has become increasingly popular in these troubled times. It isn’t hard to understand why that is the case. Meditation has long been established as a means of stilling the soul, while creating a tranquil state of mind. The practice clears your thoughts so you can take-on life with more grace and poise.

From a Christian perspective, there is much to consider about meditation. In fact, there are several benefits to Christian meditation that are well worth keeping in mind. Not only can the training help you enjoy a more profound, intensive, and loving relationship with God, but it can also give you the numerous perks that are inherent with meditation, namely stabilized blood pressure, steadiness of mood, clarity of mind, increased memory, greater concentration, improved creativity, and enhanced cognitive skills.

What Is Meditation?

Meditation differs from relaxation techniques, sleeping, and hypnosis. With meditation, your mind remains alert during a relaxed state. What you are doing is clearing away the debris that prohibits you from experiencing serenity of mind. The kind of peaceful serenity that frees the mind into a more productive state. Through a combination of controlled breathing, memorized Bible verses, and a good place to set up, you can take full advantage of everything this contemplative practice can bring to your life.

Sitting quietly is the most popular way to meditate. However, some people prefer to walk or exercise. Some even utilize yoga. The latter methods are known as moving meditations. If you've ever worked out, chances are you might have entered a state of meditation without knowing it. A healthy human body is so predisposed to enter a state of mediation, that even the regular cadence of breath and movement can induce a state of realization with God.

While the most effective approach is to sit down for 15-20 minutes per day, the truth of the matter is that every little bit helps. So if you enter into a state of tranquility during a good workout, go for it. Even a five minute session can help you develop a mind that embraces God and receives His eternal peace.

If you are eager to take advantage of Christian meditation, there are just a few simple things that you will need to keep in mind.

Getting Started With Christian Meditation

One of the exceptional qualities about Christian contemplative development is the fact that getting started is actually pretty easy. The challenge is to get to a point in which your mind is cleared of doubt, hate, fear, or any emotion that engages your mind with constant ruminations. When you can let go of emotions, it clears the way for God. Then your relationship to the Lord will be crystal clear. Clarity of mind and heart is how we can communicate with God.

Quietly and intently, sitting before the Lord and in this light, which one could consider to be the light of His eternal, boundless love, we can find true peace. A peace the surpasses all understanding and nourishes the soul. By combining the foundation of your faith with the basics of meditation, your Christian meditation training will yield the best best results.

Ideally, you will want to find a quiet place in which to practice and relax. Choose a location where you will not be disturb. Then you can practice it anytime of the day. Many find that mediation is a great way to start the day. Others prefer to use meditation as a means of winding down before bed. The choice is going to be yours to make. Others still prefer to meditate in the middle of the day. What do you think is going to work best for you? Generally, once in the morning and once at night is the preferred technique.

Ultimately, as a beginner, you’ll want to start with a quiet place and time. We know this can be easier said than done, particularly if you have kids, but do the best you can. Sitting cross-legged on the floor, or upright in a straight back chair, you will want to have your feet flat on the floor. Your hands should be gently folded in your lap. You can try lying down, but many find that this can put them to sleep!

Nonetheless, begin your Christian meditation training by closing your eyes. Once you are settled close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. Slow, gentle breathing patterns are ideal for meditation. As you start to relax, a memorized Bible verse, or biblical concept, is going to be very helpful as a focal point. Relaxation is not something you can force, but if you can find a verse, or biblical concept of significance to you to concentrate on, then you should begin to feel the natural lightness that comes with relaxation. That's the beginning of meditation.

Once you feel “lightness” of mind, some describe the body as feeling “heavy”, your job is to allow your focal point to become the one an only thought. Eventually, within another 10 minutes, or so, you will enter a deeper state of meditation. This state of mind will feel as though you are experiencing eternity. “God set eternity in the heart of man” Ecclesiastes 3:11

You may feel joy, happiness, and complete peace with God and the world. You may also cry at the beauty that is just on the other side of the thin veil we call reality. Whatever your experience always remember to love God and thank Him, always.

A Few More Christian Meditation Tips

By naturally focusing on your breathing, in addition to a Bible verse, or concept, of your choice, your body will begin to relax on a level you have likely never experienced before. With this Christian meditation training, the important thing to remember is that it takes time. You aren’t going to become an expert overnight. Your mind will struggle to a certain degree, as you try to let go. Learn to free the mind so God's word becomes the only focus will take time. The change will be gradual. So gradual in fact, that you may not notice your progress in deeper states of mind, a critical element in loving God with all heart, soul, and mind.

Don’t put too much emphasis on “doing it right.” There isn’t really such a thing. The mind will naturally wonder. When it does simply acknowledge it, let the thought or emotion “go” and allow your your verse to regain a prominent position. Keep rehearsing this technique and you find that your biblical focus will improve. The methods and ideas outlined here are the most fundamental when embarking on your spiritual quest, you can try adding other elements to your practice in order to optimize your experience, at the end of the day, everyone has a different journey. Most important remember to relax. God loves you, and He wants you to find Him through the serenity and tranquility of Christian meditation.
