Defeat Temptation With 4 Trusted Techniques
As you can imagine we get thousands of emails many of which are confessions. We are humbled and honored that so many people trust us with life situations that are painful to look at when contrasted to the beauty and purity of our Lord Jesus.
Sin is ugly, it's vile, corrupt, and sometimes it attacks the minds and hearts of believers everyday, every hour, and in some cases every minute. By reading each email we can detect the struggle, the embarrassment, remorse, and the desire to break free once and for all.
With this article I hope to instruct you and inspire you to envision a new path and walk you through. The journey of a thousand miles starts with one step, then another, and another. Your destination is not a place but a state of mind. A state of mind where you and God are of one understanding, one knowledge, one joy, one love, and one Spirit.
In this state of mind you can first know, love, and understand God's will. With His will clearly seen in the mind and grasped by the heart you can then proceed with clarity, purpose, and vision. Your mission to accomplish the will of God (John 4:32 – 34) is empowered by God when you are clear of the world's ways.
Considering Counsel and Accountability
The most common advice for breaking away from unwanted behavior is accountability. While the practice has many benefits reporting to some one doesn't work on the deeper psyche. Accounting for one's actions, speaking about it, and then receiving advice may work on one level, but what about addressing the source of the problem.
We see accountability, and even professional counseling, as one part of a holistic system. If we peel back sinful actions an look inside we find a connection of thoughts, desires, and actions. (Matthew 15:19, James 1:15) Undoubtedly, the end result of this inner activity is sin which causes many people to feel remorseful and in need of some type of counsel.
Once counsel is sought and understanding begins to settle in the mind the real work can begin. The real work of addressing, dismantling, and rewiring the connection between thoughts, desires, actions. We can positively rewire our spiritual and physical systems of thought, desire, and action. (Matthew 7:18) All of us has the power to re-create who we are. What ever we have created with thought in heart and mind can be changed.
The Power You Will Stand On
Fortunately, it's up to us to change and God gives us His unending love and power to do so. In Matthew 12:33 Jesus, compares life to a tree and advises His listeners to cultivate their life in the proper way so it may produce “good fruit”. Conversely, Jesus also states that people may cultivate life with activities that produce “bad fruit”.
The most evident lesson from this discourse is the freedom of choice. Every human being on the planet earth has been given the power of freewill. It is a power that no one can take away from you. You have the power to choose, work, and change. No one can stand in your way. God created the universe with the decree of choice over your life. This decree is the power you will stand on to start your journey.
All enemy forces shutter at the thought of this truth. The truth is that the power of your freewill is much greater, larger, and definitely more powerful than any mental or spiritual influence that you think is keeping you from enjoying freedom in God's unlimited love, light, and power.
The power that hinders you from breaking free once and for all is in your mind. You feed the power that holds you back! Every time you think how difficult it is to control yourself you give power to the thing that is holding you back from being your very best. It's that thought that empowers the enemy and allows the gates of evil to open. So now let's get to work. Below is the step-by-step process that will help disconnect power from the enemy and rewire your mind and body for a brighter and better future with God.
Step 1 – Beat The Enemy And Be Free!
The first step is to completely and absolutely eliminate any and all thought of weakness. This step will requires practice and constant reflection of your thought. With a little practice you will become a pro. It won't take long to realize how many victimizing thoughts you have each day. You are not a victim and the devil has no power over you!
God's power of choice and freewill is an invisible force. Just like love, freewill abounds in the universe and it was created with you in mind, YOU! Take the power and repeat in your mind constantly that God created this power for you. Grab it. Use it. Create affirmations you can repeat to yourself. See it! Practice it! Enjoy it!
Every time you notice a debilitating thought, something that weakens the view of yourself, I want you to immediately grab on to God's power of choice and let your imagination go wild with thoughts of the level of freedom God has given you. See yourself moving through life with power, love, humility toward God, and wisdom, always being supported by God who loves enough to provide with His own life 24/7/365.
This tactic immediately breaks the power of the shackles. Remember, the power that keeps the shackles lock and bound is your mind. Switch your mentality from victim to child of the omnipotent God and the shackles will open, release, and literally vanish – disintegrate.
Practice, practice, practice. Watch for weak thoughts, stop, and reflect on God's loving energy all around you and how it supports you in His universe that he created for you. Then take action. Move! Once you feel energized take action. Do something constructive, help others, provide solutions, think creatively, use God's energy to do good in the world.
Step 2 – Discern Your Way To The Top
A person of understanding (discernment) walks straight. (Proverbs 1:10) I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in real knowledge and all discernment, so that you may approve the things that are excellent, in order to be sincere and blameless until the day of Christ. (Philippians 1:9-10)
Discernment is the ability to recognize the difference between two or more options. Your ability to distinguish thought and its quality either by reasoning or other senses is another power God has given you. Not only do you have to awaken that power, but you have to use, every day! If you don't use it you may fall prey to the wiles of the devil, again.
This is another one of those God given powers that the enemy just squirms at the thought you becoming enlightened with. So use it!
Observe your thoughts. Watch as if your mind were a third party. Distinguish which thoughts may lead to unwanted behavior like anger, rage, irritation, lust, jealously, envy, covetousness, hatred, judgment, and low self esteem.
By observing thought you cut 90% of it's power to lead you astray. The reason why you become virtually free from the pull is because you no longer participate in the thought as you did in the past. Instead, you become an objective mental observer who discerns thought. Some may be good and lead to productive activities and help others, some not so good that lead to indulgent behavior, and others that are neutral that may lead to neither positive or negative words and activities.
Your job as an objective observer is simply toss away any thought that cannot stand before Christ. This technique is especially powerful when you are singularly focused on your ideal outcome. (Be holy because I am Holy. 1 Peter 1:16)
Of paramount importance is practice. In fact, all steps outlined in this article require minute-by-minute practice. Your effort must be unrelenting. Fortunately, if you practice these steps exactly as described you find them to be simply habits to adopt, very simple. So simple that they will yield extraordinary results. Because of their simplicity they can easily become part of anyone's personality.
Step 3 – Become The Word
If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him. (John 14:23)
I've teaching this verse for years. In my point of view, this is one of the most important verses in the Bible. This verse literately states that if we love Jesus we will “keep” His word and the action of keeping His word produces the intensified presence of God in us.
Keeping God's word blends the actions of reading, interpreting, studying, and meditating over God's word, not for a few minutes, but hours, and consistently, daily, and constantly.
This practice will literately rewire your brain. Constant, unceasing, study and meditation of God's word will restructure neurological thought [patterns in the brain. This principle is also true of anything we hold our mind attentive to. Speak to aeronautic specialist and you will know that the body of knowledge known as aeronautics is as one with his mind.
The word of God has a much more special quality that any subject studied on the planet. The word of God that is cultivated in the mind allows the presence to dwell more purely and abundantly in the body. Jesus also put it this way, “The eye is the lamp of the body. If the eye is good (or sound), the whole body will be full of light.
Let me translate. If the vision of your mind, or what you consistently hold in your mind is sound, then your whole body will be full of his light, or His increased presence. (Matthew 6:22) The only thing that Jesus can consider to be sound in the mind is His word, nothing else.
So read, study, and meditate over God's word everyday until it becomes the natural default thought of your mind. Then the Father of lights will illuminate you from within. (John 14:23)
Cultivate the word and the word will become flesh, in you. By following steps 1 and 2, this step will resemble the parable of the sower and it's results which states that anyone who sows the word in good ground will yield life crops multiplied 30, 60, and even 100 fold.
Step 4 – Meditate Daily
Meditation has be proven to increase neuroplasticity, a critical brain activity when learning new habits an rearranging thought patterns. When you meditate daily you reset the brain. When you practice Christian meditation, you give yourself a chance to become reset by Jesus, who regenerates and feeds all who come to Him. Let us know what you think. Post your comments below. We love you and we're praying for you. God bless you.
