Interestingly, visualizing past scenarios showed more activity in areas associated with the self (the medial prefrontal cortex and posterior cingulate cortex).

This type of practice can change a person mentally and physically. Obese participants who joined the self-affirming study were first given positive affirmations about exercise to ruminate over. The effect was mostly negative when they began to reflect on the nearly impossible task of exercise and risking a higher change of sickness and disease.
When they were engage with positive future based visualizations about exercise, the results showed that they became more active in the ensuing month after the study, as measured by accelerometers they wore around the wrists.
